Wednesday Winners

A quick rundown of some nice guitars and good deals to be had in the past week. Hats off to these folks for making Kijiji a great place to buy and sell used guitars.

On Friday, we'll do the failures.  They're much better, and by better I mean worse.  Much worse.  Funny though, so yeah...

If something here catches your eye, search Kijiji in Ontario and you'll be sure to find them... if they haven't already been sold.

Disclaimer: I don't know the people selling,  and haven't played these guitars.  Nothing here should be understood as me vouching for any particular guitar.  If someone knocks on my door demanding their money back, from me, I'm going to be amused, momentarily confused, and then pretty angry.

Fender Stratocaster Plus - $1000


A killer blue finish, Lace Sensor Gold pickups, locking tremolo, and LSR roller nut? Yes please.  That finish kills me.  Not one of the sought after late '80s/early '90s examples, but for $1000 you'd be hard pressed to beat this at this price, especially considering what a run-of-the-mill American Standard is going for right now.


G&L Legacy - $1000

Speaking of blue Strats, check out this sparkle blue G&L Legacy for the same $1000 burning a hole in your pocket.  Love the matching headstock, and I've never heard a bad thing about G&L.  Don't love the Tortoise pickguard, but you can't have it all.  Tough choice between this one and the last one @ $1000.


Burns Cobra - $450

Sick of samey looking Strats?  This looks pretty cool if you ask me.  Don't love the black nut on these (white would have looked less cheap), but the pick guard is pretty awesome, as are the Brian May looking pickups.  I have no idea what playability is like on these, but it appears well made.  Good pictures score some extra points.



 G&L Cantrell (Tribute Series) - $500

The best part of this may be that despite it being a "Tribute Series" (G&L's budget line), there's no indication on the headstock that is is (if that matters to you).  $500 isn't much of a deal (I'm seeing $599.99 US Retail), but seems like these aren't available anymore, so if you're an Alice in Chains fan...


Squier Jagmaster w/Case - $155

$155 for a guitar with a hard case?  I bet you could get him down to $120.  Duncan designed pickups, and a super cool guitar that would make an outstanding gift for a beginner.  that fretboard needs some love though.  I've seen deserts with more moisture.  Compare to the guitars above and below and you'll see what I mean.

Destroyer/Telecaster Hybrid - $120

Listed as a "kit guitar", this probably plays like shit, but that isn't the point.  Some unholy cross between a Tele and an Ibanez DT 350, this thing has crazy written all over it.  If this plays half as well as the Jagmaster above, go with this one for "outlaw country/punk" street cred.  That the seller noted it missing a string is, well, notable... right?

Squier Jaguar Review - What do you mean, modified?

Quick Update:  Restringing the Stratocaster with the System III requires the patience of a saint.  I'm not going to go through the many stages of anger, frustration, denial, acceptance, and final victory, but suffice to say there might have been a bit of crying.  Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar I bought this guitar on a whim.  Over some holiday gathering, I went to a music store with my brother.  This caught my eye, and the price was right (Less than $300 out the door).  Sure it had issues right off the bat, but it was soooo cool. Let's get something out of the way - I have no idea why this is part of the "Vintage Modified" series and not the "Classic Vibe" series. You see, the Vintage Modified series is supposed to be a collection of classic designs with a few modern popular updates. This definitely isn't that. WTF is modified here? Pacifica 112 vs. Squier Standard Stratocaster

My recent Squier Standard Stratocaster has me thinking about entry level guitars, and specifically the first new electric guitar I purchased, a Yamaha Pacifica 112.  They're great guitars if you ask me, but for obvious reasons don't get the exposure a "real Stratocaster" does (as real  as a Squier can be I suppose). A comparison of the two may be apt. A Squier Stratocaster lists for $289.99 on L&M , while a new Yamaha Pacifica 112J will set you back $239.99 plus tax.  I seem to recall that the Yamaha and a hard case ran me just over $400, so we're about exactly where we were 20 years ago in terms of price.  Weird. Don't expect a comprehensive review of either guitar - that really isn't the point.  I want to talk about a few differences that indicate where your money is going and hope you can figure the rest out yourself. Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar: Trade Bait?

I bought my Squire Vintage Modified Jaguar on a weekend while visiting my parents. I had decided that I needed to get out of the house for a little while. Aside from going to the mall, there's not much more to do than visit the music store, which is all the excuse I need to wander around Long and McQuade for an hour.  This was back in the day when I still knew most of the people who worked there, including the owner. Well, I say the owner; he wasn't the owner anymore, but he WAS the owner, and then the manager prior to his retirement retirement. At any rate, I went there with my wife and poked around. I saw these Jaguars and Jazzmasters that I had recently watched reviews for on YouTube. Lee Anderton and Rob Chapman had raved about them, except for the bridge, which was the same as the original design and didn't lend itself to bending. 1985 Contemporary Stratocaster Review

I'm really not looking forward to this... Despite being an overall fantastic guitar, I'm a little apprehensive about restringing the damn thing. This particular Stratocaster came into my possession strung with 9s, and strung poorly at that.  The locking nut eliminates this from being much more than a minor gripe from a tuning stability standpoint, but I'm accustomed to 11s on most of my guitars, and playing this just isn't comfortable. There are a lot of things to like about the Fender System III tremolo, but the process of restringing doesn't seem to be one of them.  I haven't taken the plunge yet, but it seems that the online community is universally in agreement - It is a total pain in the ass, and there's no good way to do it.  I'd have to imagine this was a contributing factor to Fender not continuing to use this system (though I bet the introduction of the roller nut on the USA Stratocaster Plus models was the real culprit/hero).
