Weekly Roundup - Les Paul-itis

Here are the interesting pieces I've come across on Kijiji in the past week. If this list is any indication, I'm due for a Gibson soon. More guitars after the jump.

Gibson SGJ - $450

A good, simple guitar.  Satin finish, 2014 Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret, and a real garage rocker vibe. Totally cool, except for the price.  $450 is insane.  I saw this EXACT SAME GUITAR at Best Buy (ugh) for $349.99.  Despite my distaste for Best Buy, I picked it up and it seemed fine, so I'm not sure why this sell thinks they can get $50 more than retail. 

Fender FSR Stratocaster - $1100

This is a cool Strat.  Mahogany body with a black headstock?  Looks like Fender is trying to ape someone else's look.  Gee I wonder.  Though the seller didn't mention it, I'm fairly certain this guitar has a compound radius as well - the fret board gets flatter the farther up you go.  One more reason this isn't your best friend's Strat.  With the Canadian dollar where it is, $1100 isn't that bad for an FSR Fender.

Gibson Les Paul Studio Blue Swirl - $900

This is easily my favorite of the list, and I'm tempted to list a bunch of items to try and come up with the $900 for this one.  I absolutely love the color of this, and I have been in the market for a blue guitar...  

Gibson Les Paul Studio Wine Red - $875

Hard for me not to like this one.  I've owned a wine red studio in the past, and it's a guitar I regret selling. This looks like an amazingly clean example, and the top has a slight flame atypical of the Studios.  

Gibson got this one right all those years ago.  To me, a Les Paul Studio is Wine Red.  For some reason the seller has come down $75 in the last 24 hours.  They are willing to trade for a white American Strat.  White only.  Didn't specify the fretboard type. 

Weird.

I'll be watching this one closely, and am wondering if a unique Japanese Contemporary Stratocaster could sway them.

Gibson Les Paul Traditional - $1700

Bravo to the owner for this picture - it really brings out the top and reminds me of the Rosso Corsa Les Pauls for MUCH less money.

Simply great looking guitar at a very reasonable price.  If it were me, I'd put some gold top hat knobs on it though - I've always found those black knobs to be cheap looking.

Quick Update:  Restringing the Stratocaster with the System III requires the patience of a saint.  I'm not going to go through the many stages of anger, frustration, denial, acceptance, and final victory, but suffice to say there might have been a bit of crying.  Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar I bought this guitar on a whim.  Over some holiday gathering, I went to a music store with my brother.  This caught my eye, and the price was right (Less than $300 out the door).  Sure it had issues right off the bat, but it was soooo cool. Pacifica 112 vs. Squier Standard Stratocaster

My recent Squier Standard Stratocaster has me thinking about entry level guitars, and specifically the first new electric guitar I purchased, a Yamaha Pacifica 112.  They're great guitars if you ask me, but for obvious reasons don't get the exposure a "real Stratocaster" does (as real  as a Squier can be I suppose). A comparison of the two may be apt. A Squier Stratocaster lists for $289.99 on L&M , while a new Yamaha Pacifica 112J will set you back $239.99 plus tax.  I seem to recall that the Yamaha and a hard case ran me just over $400, so we're about exactly where we were 20 years ago in terms of price.  Weird. Don't expect a comprehensive review of either guitar - that really isn't the point.  I want to talk about a few differences that indicate where your money is going and hope you can figure the rest out yourself. 2013 Squier 51 Review

My first electric guitar was an MIK Squier Stratocaster, with a rosewood fretboard, in an aged Olymipic White with a black guard and white plastic.  I traded that guitar towards a Yamaha Pacifica, thinking that I was taking a big leap forward. Korean Epiphone Les Paul Deluxe (1998)

Guitars, like all instruments I imagine, are sentimental.  Spend any extended period of time with a particular guitar and you'll find yourself rationalizing it as one might another person.  "Flaws" transform into lovable idiosyncrasies that define what makes the guitar unique to your experience.  Basically, you learn to love it. Sometimes.   Other times the damn thing just wont stay in tune, and that fact haunts you for 20 years. Behold, the 1998 Epiphone Les Paul Deluxe. This particular guitar was given to me by a friend who had spent the better part of a decade ignoring it. When I received it, the frets were green, the pickups were touching the strings, and the body was covered in what might be generously described as DNA. Also, there was a Tool Sticker.
