Something's Gotta Give
It's been quite awhile since I've done anything guitar related. It's not that I've stopped playing, it's just that for the first time in forever I'm satisfied with what I have.
Well, no, that's not quite right.
I'm never satisfied, only appeased for short periods of time (Czechoslovakia only tides you over so long, right?) . Those periods are usually extended when Kijiji is filled with nothing but $1200 US Stratocasters. A guitar that a year ago was worth maybe $800 is now worth a cool grand?
Seriously?
Stranger still, there are some prices that seem to have gone the other way. SG Standards are regularly appearing for less than a grand, which is great value if you ask me. Wanna bet this is because of the great pricing confusion Gibson caused with the SGJ?
Anyway, I wanted to get back into the mix, so I posted both Les Paul's currently in the collection, just to see what was out there.
The most interesting offer has come on the Gibson Les Paul Studio. I got an offer for "one of a couple of amps or a Flying V". The chances the amps are of interest is low, but the Flying V is interesting, and I immediately decide that if it is a white Flying V with a case the trade is done.
I suspect it isn't, so I ask for pictures.
The pictures come later that evening, and to no ones surprise the Flying V is in fact a faded, and one in questionable condition. Aside from a "custom sticker" (which is super cool btw), the pickguard looks busted at the very bottom. On the flip side, the keen eye will note Seymour Duncans installed, not that it adds any value...
I would also give me a few more things to write about...

Aside form the V, the trader sends a pic of a Marshall DSL40C and a couple of Mesa heads - a Dual Rec and a Stiletto. All seem to be in great condition, but we've got two problems. First, I don't currently own a cabinet, so the Dual Rectifier and the Stiletto are out (to say nothing of the fact that I don't really need a 100 watt head for my tiny little area). Second, while the Marshall has me raising an eyebrow, the value doesn't line up.
Is there a way forward here? I'm not sure. The only was I see this deal happening is with a 2 for 1, wherein any two pieces from the trader will get the deal done, but I doubt he'll go for that. Still it may be worth a shot, with the DSL40C being few and far between on Kijiji, and Andertons raving about it on Youtube every chance they get.
That and the V and I might be able to get a decent return on flipping them, setting me up to hunt for that next great bargain.
I would also give me a few more things to write about...
I'll keep you posted.
