Straturday: Different Blues

No, "Straturday" isn't particularly original, but it's about as good an excuse as I can come up with to post random pics of my Stratocasters... I promise to try and have a point.

Each of these guitars is blue, albeit very different blues.

From left to right: A Made in USA Aqua Lucerne Firemist Eric Johnson Stratocaster, a Lake Placid Blue Made in Korea Squier Stratocaster circa 1987, and a Made in Mexico Sonic Blue Blacktop Stratocaster.

Pacifica 112 vs. Squier Standard Stratocaster

My recent Squier Standard Stratocaster has me thinking about entry level guitars, and specifically the first new electric guitar I purchased, a Yamaha Pacifica 112.  They're great guitars if you ask me, but for obvious reasons don't get the exposure a "real Stratocaster" does (as real  as a Squier can be I suppose). A comparison of the two may be apt. A Squier Stratocaster lists for $289.99 on L&M , while a new Yamaha Pacifica 112J will set you back $239.99 plus tax.  I seem to recall that the Yamaha and a hard case ran me just over $400, so we're about exactly where we were 20 years ago in terms of price.  Weird. Don't expect a comprehensive review of either guitar - that really isn't the point.  I want to talk about a few differences that indicate where your money is going and hope you can figure the rest out yourself. Another One Bites the Dust: Squier MIK Stratocaster SOLD

In what is starting to feeling like a run of exceptionally good luck, I've managed to sell another guitar for more than I acquired it for, and like the Epihpone Les Paul, it only took 48 hours to get it to move for my asking price. This time, it was the 1988-89 Squier Stratocaster, which sold for $250. I've been keen on turning gear into cash after playing the Paisley and Blue flower Jazzmasters currently available at most Long and McQuade's across Ontario, but have been given pause after discovering a Made In Japan "Hybrid Series" 50s Stratocaster. Long story short, it was an amazing player.  Not being keen on dropping over a grand on a sunburst Strat that wont get any love, I'm trying to be patient and wait for the right thing to come along. Studio Blues - What happened to Les Paul Studio Values?

It would seem that I'm having a more difficult time selling my Les Paul Studio than I would have predicted.  It isn't the end of the world, and makes for a compelling AND unavoidable reason for keeping it. It did get me thinking about why my thinking was so far off the mark. I'm still here. I've commented before on why I think Gibson made a huge mistake in pricing the SGJ and LPJ as they did, and it feels like their chickens are coming home to roost. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that makes me a giant cock. That image search could have ended poorly. Stupid pricing decisions, combined with their infamous rosewood seizure, have combined to create the perfect shit-storm on the used market. So you wanted to be a rock star? Finding the right piece of gear can be difficult, mostly because of there's a GIANT disconnect between "the sound in your head" and "the sound they're selling you." If you ask me, that's the disconnect that single handedly keeps the guitar industry afloat.  Let's face it - nobody is marketing to rock stars.  They're marketing to a guy who started playing guitar in high school, but eventually grew up and found that he had this super awesome thing called disposable income. In other words, me. You mean I've got more money than I need for food and shelter?
