SOLD: Squier 51
I just sold a guitar to the Cornish Game Hen. I can't believe it.
I've been posting the Squier 51 on and off since acquiring the Eric Johnson Rosewood. A few predictably sad offers had come through over the course of a few weeks, including an offer to trade for an Epiphone Hummingbird from none other than Hen-Man himself.
As a quick recap, Hen-man is a guy who seems to never want to deal. His communication is bizarre and he regularly demonstrates he knows nothing about guitars. I don't think I've posted one low value guitar that he hasn't responded to with some insulting offer.
The guitar was posted for $225. Hen-man offered $200 and demanded to see a picture of the headstock. I sent the pic, but responded that I would absolutely not move on price. He asked what kind of pickups were in it.
I lost my mind - he's done this before, convinced that his Squier Affinity Telecaster has "Duncans" in it. Truth be told, they are "Duncan Designed" pickups.
I responded with "read the damn ad again". He asked when he could check it out. He immediately followed with a message reading "Now?"
No Hen-Man. No.
After a few days of scheduling conflicts, mostly on account of him working nights, he called me to confirm the time. He then proceeded to ask me what color the guitar was. By this point I was pretty sure this guy was just fucking with me. Had to be. I gave him my address and then wondered if that was the smartest idea...
Hen-man showed up shortly after he said he would, gig bag in hand. He walked with a bit of a limp, and smelled a bit off. He was going to work at a factory, so I'm not sure how much I'll fault him for this, but he left his smell in my house after leaving... Not impressed.
He also wore a Boston Bruins hat. Ugh.
At any rate, he came down to the guitar cave, I showed him the guitar and explained the pickup switching options (Bridge/Both/Neck + Bridge Split) and played a few lines plugged in just to show him it worked. He proceeded to note how firm I was on price, how he got a great deal on his Epiphone Hummingbird ($200), and how he preferred the small necks of the Squier because his middle finger on his fretting hand was locked straight.
Dude. Go see a doctor.
He asked me why this guitar was so special. It was now clear that this guy was just shy of a diagnosed learning disability, so my temperament changed a little - "he's not trying to be annoying... he can't fucking help it." (Say that in Jim Jefferies voice and you'll get what I'm saying).
He gave me the asking price and was on his way. Transaction complete.
I feel bad for the guitar.
How did I make out?
I bought the guitar for $200, then installed the GFS Nashville pickup in the bridge. I bought the pickup as a set for $20. That makes the math pretty simple. $210 for the guitar and pickup, plus $5 for the new strings.
The guitar sold for $225.
Gas was almost a non-factor, with the guitar coming to me, and the buyer coming to me. Only the pickups require... pickup.... Terrible.
So basically $10 and a free GFS Nashville neck pickup. Sweet.
