The Least Cool Ever?

Image
I haven't been able to obsess over guitars, amps, and pedals for the better part of the year so far, mostly on account of needing to obsess over fixing my car, which went from a minor annoyance to a full dose of OCD research, money, trial, money, error, money, time, money... You get the idea. Thankfully, and in no small part due to my father's willingness to trouble shoot problems over multiple weeks, I'm officially past these issues, and for the first time in a long time I've been finding myself coming back to Kijiji rather than researching some obscure automotive part or service procedure. I can't say there is a theme to all of these, but the Telecaster count is pretty high, and 4 Stratocasters and only  single Telecaster in one's collection seems woefully imbalanced. Also, and in case there was any confusion over this, I am unreservedly uncool, despite what might have been suggested. LTD EC-1000 Deluxe - $750 I don't really get on with L

After picking up the Squier MIK Stratocaster, and the Maz 8 shortly before that, I'm going to have a hard time justifying another gear acquisition without moving something.  There's a Fender Princeton Recording, mentioned in a previous post, that is on the radar in exchange for the Marshall DSL1, but the owner seems a bit flaky in terms of meeting times.  We'll have to wait and see if that comes to fruition. Hagstrom Viking Deluxe - $600 Hard to argue with that finish, and the unique headstock combined with the Grover Imperial-esque tuners really make this guitar one classy looking axe. $600 is probably a fair price with a case (these list for around $1K), but the seller notes that they are moving across country, which means they're probably on a schedule. Combine the potential necessity of sale with the fact that this instrument is extremely local to me and I'm inclined to throw out and offer of $400 and move the Squier vintage Modified Jaguar to cover the

Used Guitars and Amps for June

Image
...If I had a million dollars...  I'd continue to buy used guitars.  It's just more exciting than new if you ask me.  Scouring Kijiji and having that great piece of gear pop up like a light in the fog. I'd probably look to bigger things first, but once the house and car and family were taken care of, I'd probably spend my days driving around buying cheap gear and writing about it.  Once the guitar room was full, I'd sell them all, and write about that too.  I promise I wouldn't mark anything up... too much? Until that day, window shopping will have to do. Marshall JCM1-C - Swap/Trade I'm not sure that I could be any happier with my DSL1-C.  A perfect little practice amp, it sounds great at just the right volume for late night playing with kids sleeping two floors away.  Better still, with the attenuator off and the amp cooking at a FULL ONE WATT, it's enough to keep up with my daughter's junior drum kit. This version is the JCM 800 ve

Trade Offer: American Special Telecaster?

Image
I'm still waiting to meet up with Mr. Edwards .  I haven't been too excited, because I remain skeptical if the meetup will ever take place.  It isn't because I get a bad vibe from they guy - quite the oppostie.  He's a family man who hasn't been able to make it out due to a sick kid and what I imagine are the usual responsibilities that accumulate by the weekend. Sometimes though, that's enough to sink a deal.  I the grand scheme, a guitar trade is easily pushed down the priority list when children and wives are involved. Still, I'm holding out hope. In the meantime, I'm still fielding offers, and yesterday one came along that had me wondering if I really wanted the Edwards... A 2012 American Special Telecaster... I think. The owner sent a picture of the back of the headstock and this example dates to 2012, making me think that it is an American Special.  My first guess was "Highway 1" based on the 70s style logo on the headstock,

Friday's Failures

Here's the rundown of the silliest, stupidest, and downright ripoff-i-est postings I've come across in the past week.  Keep 'em coming Kijijiots. I'm not saying that each of these is a person trying to screw you, but... Well, it IS walking like a duck, isn't it?

Trade Train #5: Who the F$%^ is Jonny Greenwood?

Image
Good, but we can do better. Quick recap of the stops we've made so far. Try to keep up: A Gibson Les Paul Studio (Sold for $900) + $900 turns into... A Dr. Z Maz 38 with a Leyland Sound 2x12 Cabinet, turns into... A Gibson Les Paul DC Faded, a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue, and $300, turns into... Wait! The Fender DRRI and $300 get off the train! They didn't have tickets. Sneaky Bastards. So the LPDC becomes... A Gibson SG Standard (with original hard shell case) Everyone caught up?  Good, because while the Gibson SG Standard was a fantastic trade, the best was still to come. Choo choo! Next station! How could you hate a train?

2015 Elmira Vintage Guitar Show

Image
For the second year, I spent a Sunday morning at the Elmira Vintage Guitar Show.  Whenever I could, I pulled out a camera to capture a quick pic (before getting bowled over by the crowd).  Despite being a small town show, there's definitely enough to keep your attention for a few hours.  Pics after the jump.

Damn "Tele" - or is it "Teley"?

Image
Here's a post I saw come up locally yesterday: "Squier Teley - $200 - Made in Japan Squire Teley sehs a beauty. 200.00 or best offer may consider trade. Pictures don't want to load will send" Made is Japan you say?  For $200 bucks you say?  "sehs" a beauty you say? Too good not to ask, I say:

Unknown Excitement / Known Disappointment

No more than 48 hours passed before I posted the Squier Stratocaster back on Kijiji.  It isn't that there is anything wrong with it, but it isn't dear, and I have a fever to feed. The fever is not cowbell, and certainly not more of it. I got a ridiculously good deal on this one, so after a good cleaning, a few high quality photos, and a quick check of market conditions, it was ready for the block.

The Mod Squad - 2001 American Series Telecaster

Modifying guitars can be a great way to turn the guitar you have into the guitar you want.  Be careful though, because the definition of "the guitar you want" changes from week to week.  Last week's Tobacco Burst Les Paul quickly turns into this week's Pepto Bismol Pink Kramer. Because Hair. Pickups are normally where most people start, and with options at every point on the price scale, there are a ton of great options out there.  Here are some important things to keep in mind: Learn How to Solder If you can't install your own pickups, you're either shutting the door on a world of great tone or demonstrating that you have more money than brains (because you'll pay someone 50 bucks an hour to do it for you instead of learning yourself).  For $30 you can get yourself basic soldering iron, some rosin core solder and some wire.  With tons of resources online to teach you how to do it properly, and Seymour Duncan's excellent collection of
